Frequently Asked Questions

Granite

Granite

Granite countertops last far longer than those made of laminates and man-made materials because granite is nearly as hard as diamonds. It will take a professional to cut and install, and is heavier than most other countertop compositions. It's available in high-gloss & satin finishes.

Quartz

Quartz

Quartz countertops are an engineered stone product used in residential and commercial kitchen and bath applications. Quartz countertops are made by mixing and compressing natural quartz derived from granite and epoxy resins to create a hard wearing and stain-impervious surface. Quartz countertops are molded and milled to standard sizes and thickness. They come in a wide variety of colors and at a lower price point than 100 percent natural stone with less maintenance.

Natural Marble

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock, formed from limestone by heat and/or pressure within the Earth, which cause recrystalization. Impurities in the original limestone affect the resulting marble's color and type. Pure marble is white, but the stone can be reddish, yellow or green, depending on the impurities present.

Onyx

Onyx

Onyx is a form of marble, comprised mostly of calcite. Like other marbles, onyx is much softer than granite and is likely to stain or etch. With its fragile, translucent coloring, onyx is one of the more exotic natural stones on the market today. Frequently available in smaller slabs, onyx can be installed in areas that do not get a lot of use.

Cultured Marble

Manufacturers produce cultured marble from calcium carbonate or limestone granules. Limestone is the same mineral from which natural marble forms. Manufacturers coat man-made forms with wax and a clear gelcoat of polyester resin. After the gelcoat hardens, a mix is poured in that will cure to be the cultured marble. The mix consists of polyester resin, limestone, aggregate fillers, pigments for color and hardeners. Once the mix cures to hardness, the molds are removed and the cultured marble is trimmed and polished.

Corian

Corian is a solid surface material manufactured by the DuPont manufacturing company since 1967. The material is commonly used as counter top material because of the wide array of colors and textures available. Since it is made from acrylic polymer and alumina trihydate, nicks and scratches can be buffed out with a Scotch-Brite pad or orbital sander. In the fabrication process, joints can be made invisible by joining the relevant pieces with Corian's own color-matched two-part acrylic epoxy.

Laminate

Laminate countertop material offers a highly decorative, strong and affordable option that is also easy to maintain. High pressure decorative laminate (HPDL) is made by saturating sheets of decorative and core paper with resins, then pressing them under high heat, fusing the layers into a single sheet. Surprisingly, a sheet of laminate is only 30% plastic resin; the rest is paper! There are many natural looking colors and patterns of laminates made to resemble granite, slate and other types of stone.
